Dynamic Composition & Soft-Tone Coloring for Male Character Illustration
Create dramatic male character illustrations with bold perspective, expressive poses, and soft yet realistic rendering.Join Duckchun, a popular Raum Academy instructor whose classes have attracted waitlists of more than a year, and learn the drawing and coloring methods developed through over 10 years of self-directed study.
From perspective, anatomy, light, and color to composition, line art, rendering, and post-processing, this course breaks down the fundamentals behind Duckchun’s expressive male character illustrations.
You'll also learn how to study more effectively on your own—using structured exercises, self-testing, and an error log to identify weaknesses and improve them systematically.
Build Strong Fundamentals & Develop Your Own Illustration Process
Duckchun began drawing simply because she wanted to create the characters she loved.Through years of independent study, she gradually developed a structured approach to:
- Perspective
- Anatomy
- Figure drawing
- Light and shadow
- Form
- Color
- Composition
- Line art
- Texture
- Rendering
Rather than relying only on intuition, you'll learn how to understand the underlying principles of an illustration and apply them intentionally.
Then you'll put those fundamentals into practice through three complete projects:
- Upper-body single-character illustration
- Full-body single-character illustration
- Two-character illustration

Why Take This Class?
Learn How to Direct Emotion & Atmosphere
A strong character illustration is about more than drawing anatomy correctly.Composition, lighting, expression, pose, and the relationship between characters all influence how the viewer experiences the scene.
Through two single-character projects and one two-character project, you'll learn how to plan illustrations around:
- Emotion
- Character relationships
- Body type
- Character count
- Composition
- Pose
- Scene atmosphere
Make Two-Character Illustrations Feel Meaningful
Drawing two characters together introduces new challenges. You need to consider not only how each character looks individually, but also:
- Their relationship
- Visual balance
- Eye direction
- Gesture
- Distance
- Body interaction
- Storytelling
Build a Better Self-Study System
Learning alone can be difficult when you don't know what to study next or why a drawing feels wrong.Duckchun shares the methods developed through more than a decade of independent study, including:
- Croquis
- Anatomy study
- Form practice
- Lighting studies
- Texture exercises
- Color estimation
- Self-testing
- Error logging

Illustrator Duckchun
Hello, I'm Duckchun, an illustrator.I originally began drawing simply because I wanted to create the characters I loved with my own hands.
Over time, I studied theory through books while developing my own practical methods through repeated self-study and experimentation.
Today, as an instructor at Raum Academy, I teach both the fundamentals I've learned and the techniques I've developed through my own experience.
This course contains the practical methods and directing techniques I use to bring out the appeal of male characters.
In particular, I want to emphasize three things:
- The importance of fundamentals
- How to study effectively
- How to communicate emotion through illustration
