Stylized FX for Games is a 9-week online VFX course focused on creating character-driven real-time effects for games using Houdini and Unreal Engine.The course explores the artistic side of real-time FX and teaches students how to create stylized game effects inspired by anime. With real-time workflows becoming increasingly important, the course shows how Houdini and Unreal Engine can work together to create polished, dynamic, game-ready visual effects.
Students will learn the fundamentals needed to create stylized FX for games, then apply those skills to a series of practical effects, including sword slashes, pulse-bombs, phase-beams, radial effects, directional energy, playable scenes with Blueprints, polished FX layers, and portal effects.
By the end of the course, students will be able to create character-driven real-time FX designed to compete with the quality seen in top game studios.

Students create a sword slash effect. This week also covers how to colour effects and how to create the mesh.Week 3 - Pulse-Bomb
Students learn how to create a pulse-bomb effect, with a focus on textures.Week 4 - Phase-Beam
Students learn how to create a phase-beam effect.Week 5 - Radial Effect
Students create a stylized version of a radial effect.Week 6 - Directional Energy
Students create a stylized version of a directional effect.Week 7 - Blueprints
Students cover multiple topics, including how to create a playable scene using Blueprints.Week 8 - Polishing FX
Students learn how to add an extra layer of polish to bring their FX to life.Week 9 - Portal FX
