This course is intended to be a direct continuation of the “Introduction to RenderMan materials” and “Introduction to procedural Look development” courses. On this course we will create a full production look development template for RenderMan inside Katana.
This is an intermediate course and it will cover important topics for professional look development as proper color space for rendering and acesCG workflow. We will build the katana script which will allows to work on the look dev of a standard asset. For example, you will learn about automatization of look development processes; how to properly present and create your materials in a professional way; how to work with expressions in order to setup custom sub tools on katana; and, more importantly, how to build a Katana and RenderMan scene which will be the starting point of all your look development work.
Some of the key topics on this course are:
Learning about linear workflow, acesCG workflow and how to work with these, while similar and related, both are two approaches to proper color management for look development and rendering.
Connect the asset to its own rotation pivot for creating the turntable. Additionally, the student will create a rig system for the lights and environment to have control over it as well.
Custom env/HDR creation for the look development template. On it we will learn how to stich an HDR and then import this one properly into the template.
Set up the nodes to control the look development functionality such as the rotation and the light environments.
Set up a level of details system, where we can pick between different proximities to the asset and its corresponding “Leve lof Detail” (LoD).
Build the work area of the template, additionally, we will learn about how the look file works on katana and how we can define variants or passes overrides.
Define the render settings and create the AOVs and render passes to output.
Create a basic turn table presentation for review inside Nuke.
