UNLIMITED POWER​

It was always the case that Houdini was an indispensable tool in any studio or individual workflow, but it was mostly used for simulations. In the last few years, SideFX made significant leaps in covering all the “gaps” Houdini used to have. With the latest additions to Houdini, it’s slowly becoming a true all-in-one software, with a huge lead among other DCCs out there.

While this workshop focuses mostly on FX & simulations (and there’s a lot of FX!), it also covers in great detail the entire process to deliver full shots. I truly believe that with just Houdini & Nuke, you can create anything!


LIGHTNING FX​

Learn various ways to create lightning and electricity. Use a combination of simulations and procedural techniques to drive different FX. Master SOP-level techniques to generate geometry, and art direct lightning in any way you can imagine!

STYLE​

Learn the difference between “realistic” and “stylized” lightning, and where and how you should use each version.

PARTICLES​

No magic FX can exist without some particles! Master advanced simulation and shading techniques.

TORN CLOTH​

Simulate a cape with Vellum, then create tearing and strands to add realism.

OPTIMIZE​

Explore techniques and optimizations to improve simulation speed.

RIGIDS ACTIVATION​

Use geometry attributes to drive forces and activate fractured pieces in a rigid body simulation.

Create smoke and use particles to instance smaller debris, adding detail and layers to the effect.

RENDERING​

APPLY YOUR KNOWLEDGE

FX CHALLENGE​

You will receive an extra animation of the character, a shot brief, and references. It’s up to you to deliver a full shot, using the knowledge and techniques from this workshop. Artists are encouraged to take this challenge as far as they can to solidify the vast information available in this workshop. There is no true learning without application.

ALL THE MATERIAL YOU NEED

ASSETS​

The workshop covers the creation of all the assets (except character modeling & animation). However, the assets are also readily available if you want to get straight into scene assembly. Assets provided include:

  • Character FBX model (rigged)
  • Character animations
  • Hero sharp rocks
  • Small rocks with variants
  • Ground textures
  • All rendered layers for compositing & more.
