Course Overview: FIG1 - Figure Drawing 1

A foundational course in figure drawing aimed at developing analytical thinking, understanding body rhythm, and constructing anatomy. The training is based on Michael Hampton's famous process-oriented approach: transitioning from a quick gesture sketch to a complex three-dimensional form.
  • School: Brainstorm School.
  • Instructor: Michael Hampton.
  • Duration: 10 weeks (3 hours per class).
  • Level: Beginner to Intermediate (ideal for anyone looking to structure their knowledge).
  • Format: Live online lectures, critiques (draw-overs), and drawing from live models.

Who This Course Is For

  • Concept Artists and Illustrators who want to confidently draw people from imagination without blindly memorizing medical anatomy atlases.
  • Animators and 2D Artists striving to capture organic dynamics, weight, balance, and expressive character poses.
  • Beginner Artists looking to overcome the fear of the complex human figure by using simple geometry.

Weekly Syllabus

The curriculum is built from simple to complex concepts, fully reflecting the structure of his renowned textbook:
  • Weeks 1–2: Gesture & Line of Action
Finding the motion line, conveying energy, balance, and weight. Working with quick gesture sketches.
  • Weeks 3–4: Figure Construction
Enclosing the body in simple 3D shapes (spheres, cylinders, and boxes) to understand foreshortening and perspective.
  • Weeks 5–6: Head Drawing & Landmarks
Skull construction, planar breakdowns (planes of the head), facial proportions, and the correct placement of the head on the neck.
  • Weeks 7–9: Anatomy & Muscle Volumes
Breaking down major muscle groups (torso, back, limbs). Understanding the connection between skeletal landmarks and muscles during twisting and bending.
  • Week 10: Final Review & Invention
Combining all stages into a cohesive workflow. Constructing figures independently in complex and dynamic angles.

Key Skills You Will Learn

  1. Capturing the Essence of Motion: Expressing the character of a pose with just a few precise lines.
  2. Thinking in 3D: Moving past flat outlines to build the figure like a 3D structural model.
  3. Mastering Perspectives: Effortlessly rotating the ribcage and pelvis of a character in space.
  4. Understanding Mechanics: Realizing how muscles deform and stretch during movement, rather than just copying their surface contours.
